At the outbreak of First World War, the Workhouse Board of Guardians gave permission for their Board Room building to be converted into ‘Braintree V.A.D. Hospital.   It was opened on 31st May 1915.   Before it closed on 8th February 1919, the hospital had had 587 patients; carried out 10 major & 70 minor operations; and only had two deaths.   In 1948, the workhouse buildings became St. Michael’s Hospital.   It was an Auxiliary Hospital affiliated to Colchester General Military Hospital.

In 2004/5, all the hospital buildings were converted into residential apartments and commercial units, the Board Room being used to house the latter.   The development is called ‘Old Saint Michaels’.

7 November 1914, Essex Newsman [sic]:

Reflexions by Reflex.  The soldiers at Braintree appear to be having a good time.  The girls are kind, the Urban Council generous in the way of supplying hot baths free, gratis, and for nothing, and the married ladies are saying:– “Soldiers, please do not look shabby in Braintree.  Bring all clothes here that need mending.”

What can a soldier and a man want more?  I know at the same time that the girls are not forgetting their own Braintree lads who are already at the front, and fighting so bravely for England, Home, and – Braintree girls.”

13 October 1917, Essex Newsman [sic]:

CRESSING.  HARVEST THANKSGIVING SERVICES were held at All Saints’ Church, when the collections amounted to £5 17s. 6d for the Prisoners of War Fund.  Some 60 eggs were sent to the wounded soldiers and the fruit and vegetables were sent to the V.A.D. Hospital at Braintree.  …”

1 November 1918, Chelmsford Chronicle [sic]:

INFLUENZA SCOURGE STILL RAGING. Many More Deaths. The scourge of influenza is still rampant, each day bringing additional victims. …

There is a considerable amount of influenza at Colchester.  Several members of the Borough Police are absent from duty.  The death of a young machinist at the Standard Ironworks—Albert Wade—is attributed to double pneumonia, following influenza.   Mr. Walter James Kay, for 16 years manager for Messrs. Stead and Simpson, Colchester, died on Sunday from pneumonia following influenza.  He was 46.  The widow is seriously ill with influenza. … At Braintree many work people are down, and the Church School has been closed. …”

14 February 1919Chelmsford Chronicle [sic]:

GUARDIANS & COUNCILS.  BRAINTREE, Feb. 10.  Mr. Jos. Smith, J.P., C.A., presided.

V.A.D. Hospital Closed.—Mrs. Guy Gold, Commandant of the Red Cross Hospital that had been established in the Board Room at the Braintree Workhouse, wrote that the hospital was closed, and on behalf of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem she tendered grateful thanks to the Board of Guardians for their generosity in placing the Board Room at the disposal of the authorities.  During the period that the hospital had been open, from May 31st, 1915, to Feb. 8th, 1919, there had been 587 patients, ten major operations, 70 minor operations, and two deaths had occurred.  Mrs. Gold added that the officers of the hospital appreciated the kindness and consideration shown towards them by the officials of the Workhouse, and particularly Mr. H. E. Fellows, assistant clerk, and Mrs. Barlow, matron.—Mr. O. J. Ollet said the letter from Mrs. Gold quite justified the Board in its action in handing the Board Room over to the Red Cross.—It was decided to place Mrs. Gold’s letter on the minutes.

The Assistant Clerk.—The Board unanimously decided to increase the salary of the assistant clerk from £10 to £50 per annum.”

On this one surviving/undated British Red Cross card for the Braintree V.A.D. Hospital (“20 beds”), only two people’s names appear on it:- “Commandant Mrs. Guy Gold” and “Croskell M.A.”

Other people have been discovered via other sources e.g. local newspapers and British Red Cross cards (online).  However, there is no doubt that many people who assisted in the running of this establishment will never be discovered within records and, thus, they remain un-named here.

Where it is possible, it is hoped to (eventually!) create a more detailed profile for each person, if they can be 100% identified.   Please make contact if you know that a person worked here but they are not within the list, or if you have additional information on someone who is named.
